From Rags to Racism: How Djimon Hounsou's Incredible Journey Reveals Hollywood's Ugly Truth

From foraging for detergent sacks in Benin to sleeping on Parisian park benches, the remarkable odyssey of Shazam! star Djimon Hounsou has been fraught with adversity. But now, with a slew of roles under his belt, can Hollywood finally recognize the astonishing talent of this Academy Award-nominated actor? Or will the systemic racism that permeates the industry continue to hold him back?

Djimon Hounsou's cinematic dreams began during his childhood in Cotonou, Benin, where he would scavenge for Omo detergent sacks to exchange for cinema tickets. After a tumultuous journey that saw him living on the streets of Paris, he eventually found himself in Los Angeles with aspirations of becoming an actor, despite speaking limited English.

Now, with a string of critically acclaimed dramas and big-budget blockbusters to his name, the 58-year-old actor has certainly made a mark on the film industry. But as his experiences reveal, the shadow of racism still looms large over Hollywood. Hounsou has been cast as a slave three times in just five years, and even after two Academy Award nominations, he admits to feeling "seriously cheated" by the limited roles offered to Black actors.

Despite his accomplishments, Hounsou still faces a constant uphill battle. The industry's entrenched racism and undervaluing of his talent mean that he is often lowballed on pay and relegated to bit parts or sidekick roles. As Hounsou says, "Film after film, it's a struggle. I have yet to meet the film that paid me fairly."

With the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Hounsou hopes that Hollywood will finally begin to appreciate his worth. However, his story serves as a stark reminder that, despite progress, the film industry's systemic racism remains a significant barrier for talented actors like him.

Djimon Hounsou's path to Hollywood success is a powerful tale of perseverance and triumph against adversity. Despite facing the systemic racism of the film industry, he has made a name for himself through iconic roles and unforgettable performances. Now, with a major part in the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods, it's time for Hollywood to recognize the talent that has been in front of them all along.

"I've gone to studios for meetings, and they're like, 'Wow, we felt like you just got off the boat and then went back [after Amistad]. We didn't know you were here as a true actor,'" Hounsou says. "When you hear things like that, you can see that some people's vision of you, or what you represent, is very limiting."

Hounsou has fought hard for every opportunity he's been given, making his accomplishments all the more impressive. The acclaimed actor has faced limited roles and unfair pay throughout his career, a clear indication of the systemic racism prevalent in Hollywood.

"Film after film, it's a struggle. I have yet to meet the film that paid me fairly," Hounsou laments. "Viola Davis said it beautifully: she's won an Oscar, she's won an Emmy, she's won a Tony and she still can't get paid. [She added a Grammy in February.]"

Despite the challenges, Hounsou remains optimistic about the future. With his expanded role in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, he is finally receiving the recognition he deserves. "Out of them all, the DC universe has a level of respect," he says. "There wasn't much to the role at first and I did it, and it was fun. But the second time around, it was a little more respectful."

As Hounsou's star continues to rise, so too does the awareness of the systemic racism that has held back countless talented actors of color. "From time to time, they themselves make the point of saying, 'We should give him more; he's a little underappreciated.' I think they recognize that themselves," he shares.

Djimon Hounsou's incredible journey is a testament to the resilience and determination required to overcome Hollywood's systemic racism. As he takes on more significant roles and continues to break barriers, Hounsou's success will be a beacon of hope for actors of color around the world.

"Hey, it's the struggle I have to overcome!" Hounsou exclaims. And with his talent and determination, there's no doubt that he will continue to defy the odds and inspire others in the process.

Beijing's Hidden Agenda: The Sinister Truth Behind China's Suppression of COVID-19 Data

In an age when transparency should be a priority, China continues to shroud itself in secrecy, this time by withholding critical information that could provide answers to the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) has publicly criticized Chinese officials for their lack of cooperation, further fueling suspicions of a sinister agenda behind their actions. The missing data, which was briefly available in January, could have been shared with the international community three years ago, according to WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. This delay has not only hindered global research efforts but has also perpetuated uncertainty and chaos worldwide. In a damning revelation, researchers discovered that the data pointed to the possible origin of the pandemic in a Wuhan seafood market, where illegally traded raccoon dogs may have infected humans. The presence of raccoon dog DNA, coupled with genetic signatures of the coronavirus, suggested a strong

University President Cancels Drag Show Claiming it 'Denigrates' Women, and is Akin to 'Blackface' -Protests Ensue

CANYON, Texas - West Texas A&M University President Walter Wendler has taken a firm stand against what he perceives as a denigration of women by canceling a drag show event originally scheduled for March 31. Wendler, in an email to the campus community, expressed his belief that drag shows demean and diminish women, comparing the events to "blackface" performances. The show, titled "A Fool's Drag Race," was intended to raise funds for the transgender crisis management non-profit organization, The Trevor Project. While Wendler supported donating to the organization itself, he argued that drag shows perpetuate harmful stereotypes and undermine the progress made toward gender equality. Wendler emphasized his commitment to providing fair opportunities to all individuals based on their academic performance. He argued that the university, as an institution representing the state of Texas, should elevate students based on their abilities and achievements, regardles

US Military Invasion Obliterates Iraqi Lives: How the "Land of the Free" Brought Untold Suffering to the Middle East

Twenty years ago, the US, supported by the UK, invaded Iraq in a catastrophic military endeavor based on dubious intelligence and a blatant disregard for international law. This invasion would lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians, decades of civil war, and sectarian violence in Iraq, giving rise to the Islamic State militant group. In an arrogant assumption, the US and its allies, including the UK, believed that their overwhelming technical and military superiority was enough to control a distant nation and its people. The invasion began with a "shock and awe" bombing campaign to showcase this military power. This invasion would bring about untold suffering and devastation in Iraq. The US military's actions in Iraq exhibited a blatant ignorance and disdain for the reality on the ground, where decades of bloodshed were only just beginning. The Chilcot report, a damning inquiry into the UK's involvement in the war, found that the UK joined the invasi

The Return of the 'Trad-Wife' and the Feminists Strike Back

In an age where hustle culture is leaving women feeling burnt out, a new and controversial trend is emerging on TikTok: the 'Trad-Wives.' These women, who have chosen to return to traditional wife roles, are using social media to showcase the joy and fulfillment they find in homemaking, challenging the idea that a nine-to-five job is the path to a woman's happiness. Estee C. Williams, 24, is one of these women, sharing her sexy and intriguing 'Trad-Wife' lifestyle with her followers. She defines a 'Trad-Wife' as "a woman who chooses to live a more traditional life with ultra-traditional gender roles." Williams asserts that this is not an attempt to dismantle women's right to work but a personal choice made by women who believe that a wife's role is to be a homemaker. "I chose the trad lifestyle because I believe that women have drifted far from our roots," Williams said. "For me, the hustle culture was not appealing. Being a

City Life is Driving People Insane: Escaping to Suburban or Rural Areas May Be the Only Cure

A recent wave of studies has revealed a shocking truth: living in cities can wreak havoc on one's mental and physical health, making urbanites more susceptible to a range of mental disorders and health issues. Experts now suggest that the best remedy for these ailments might be to flee the concrete jungle for the serenity of suburban or rural living. City dwellers are 21% more likely to have anxiety disorders and 39% more likely to suffer from mood disorders compared to rural residents. The constant stimulation of urban life triggers a perpetual fight-or-flight response, leaving city dwellers more vulnerable to depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The psychological strain of city life is so intense that it has been linked to higher rates of PTSD, anger management issues, generalized anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, and paranoia. Moreover, urban living can also erode one's psychological immune system, making those with a family history of mental illness even more susceptibl

Recall: Eye Drops Caused Death, Blindness, and... The Removal of People's Eyeballs???

A shocking new report has revealed that contaminated eye drops have led to one death, irreversible vision loss in eight patients, and the surgical removal of four eyes due to a drug-resistant bacterial infection. US health officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have discovered 68 cases across 16 states, involving a never-before-seen strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The majority of infected patients reported using eye drops and artificial tears. In January and February, ten different brands were initially linked to the outbreak, prompting a recall of two brands made in India and imported to the US. Lawyer Natasha Cortes, representing a woman suing the drug company after losing her eye to an infection, warned, "There's likely many more people who have suffered infections who are unaware." Despite evidence of bacteria in opened bottles taken from patients, a representative for EzriCare, one of the recalled brands, claimed that testing has not de

Organoid Intelligence: The Terrifying New Threat in Biocomputing

Imagine a world where human brains, grown in a dish, are connected to computers and can learn at a pace never seen before. This may sound like a dystopian science fiction novel, but with recent advancements in organoid intelligence (OI), this terrifying possibility could become a reality. Organoid intelligence is an emerging field that aims to harness the computing capacity of 3D human brain cell cultures, or brain organoids, to memorize and compute inputs. These brain organoids can potentially replicate critical molecular and cellular aspects of learning, memory, and cognition. Unlike artificial intelligence (AI), which seeks to make computers more brain-like, OI research explores how a 3D brain cell culture can be made more computer-like. The potential applications of OI are vast and alarming. Imagine a new generation of biological and hybrid (biological-electronic) computing technologies that are faster, more powerful, and more energy-efficient than anything we've seen before. T
