University President Cancels Drag Show Claiming it 'Denigrates' Women, and is Akin to 'Blackface' -Protests Ensue
The show, titled "A Fool's Drag Race," was intended to raise funds for the transgender crisis management non-profit organization, The Trevor Project. While Wendler supported donating to the organization itself, he argued that drag shows perpetuate harmful stereotypes and undermine the progress made toward gender equality.
Wendler emphasized his commitment to providing fair opportunities to all individuals based on their academic performance. He argued that the university, as an institution representing the state of Texas, should elevate students based on their abilities and achievements, regardless of group membership.
"Forward-thinking women and men have worked together for nearly two centuries to eliminate sexism. Women have fought valiantly, seeking equality in the voting booth, marketplace and court of public opinion. No one should claim a right to contribute to women’s suffering via a slapstick sideshow that erodes the worth of women," Wendler wrote.
His decision, however, has been met with criticism from students who argue that Wendler's comparison between drag shows and blackface is "gross and abhorrent." A petition has been launched to reinstate the event, and protests have been organized on campus in support of transgender rights.
Despite the controversy, Wendler's decision to cancel the drag show highlights his commitment to upholding the dignity of women and combating misogynistic behavior. While some may disagree with his stance, it is clear that Wendler is unafraid to take a stand for what he believes is right, even in the face of fascistic opposition and cancel culture.
